I searched for information on sensory learning since that was the topic of Zull Ch. 8. This is from a press release from the Dept. of Education:

WASHINGTON, Nov 03, 2008

VSA arts and the U.S. Department of Education present "Interact!" an international children's art exhibition on display at the Department of Education Lyndon Baines Johnson Education Building from November 10 through the month of December.

The artwork selected for the exhibition was created by students participating in ArtLink, VSA arts' international cultural exchange program. Through ArtLink, students ages 7-14 create artwork and exchange their works with an international partner classroom. This year's theme challenged students to think about interactions in their daily lives and the sensory experiences that made them memorable.

International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and Department of Education from November 16-20, promotes programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. Both International Education Week and the ArtLink program share a commitment to promoting deeper understanding among cultures.

I found the following (free) website that has tons of "brain games" for both kids and adults: http://www.braingle.com/
There are so many puzzles, games, brain teasers, etc.! (And I must admit that I had some fun with the 'Pirates Booty' game!) You can access mentalrobics, which is an area to "train your brain" ... I thought that this was most appropriate given our course description and the associated readings! I hope you enjoy!

I think this is something we have talked about in class before, but I found an article about research done that found that the brain matures late in kids with ADHD. The article said specifically that kids with ADHD could be three years behind in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for focusing attention, and suppressing inappropriate thoughts and actions. I think it is really important for teachers to consider this when working with kids with ADHD, and maybe altering our expectations of them, and coming up with ways for them to work positively in a classroom with kids who are their same age, but are three years ahead in maturation.

This article in the Santa Maria Times last Wednesday caught my attention. Entitled, "No fooling: Experts bemoan loss of children's play time," it raises the issue of the importance of play time for children to be imaginative and creative and how they are not getting enough.

I found this article that has new research showing that learning a second language is to our brains what working out is to our bodies.
The younger we learn a second language the more fluent we will be. I thought it was interesting because Zull has been explaining in our readings how important language is and this study illustrates that exact idea.
